How to parent your ageing parents during coronavirus pandemic

The Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has said that the coronavirus affects the elderly and people with underlying conditions more severely than it does others. At such a time it is important to take care of our old parents and make sure they follow the social distancing and lockdown norms that have been laid down to control the spread of the virus. However, sometimes, our parents start behaving like children, adamant and careless. It is at these times that they too need parenting just like our kids do.

Sometimes, parenting our parents can get tough. However, it is something we cannot overlook at times like these. Here are a few tips to help you talk to your parents about the coronavirus pandemic.

Stop arguing about opinions and focus on facts

Parents, often conditioned by their own life experiences, feel that the younger generation overdoes certain measures. Your parents might feel that the steps being taken are too drastic and unnecessary. It is important that you tell them that these advisories that have been issued are being followed by the entire globe. It is not about what they feel about the pandemic, but about the reality of the current situation. It is best to fight their ignorance with hard facts that will help them understand the magnitude of the problem and how they can contribute to saving their lives and that of others.

It is not just about age

It is important that you make your parents understand that the precautions are not just about their age. It is not simply based on a number. Instead, your body’s immunity and other underlying medical conditions are also factors that influence the severity of the disease. The other factors also happen to be more common in people older than a certain age. Which is why anybody above the age of 60 has to be extra cautious, not step out and follow strict social distancing.

Beware of other infections

This is also the time of the year that festers a lot of other viral infections like the cold and flu. At this time, with the hospitals flooded with COVID-19 patients, it might be catastrophic if your old parents fall ill and are not able to receive medical support. It is important that they take extra care of their health and eat well. They should work to increase their overall immunity at times like these.

Do not let them live in denial

It might be so that your parents do not yet understand the magnitude of the pandemic and how the measures being taken are important to help control the spread. Show them how social distancing actually helps in curbing the spread of the disease. You will be able to put your point across best if you have hard facts supporting you. It is necessary for all elders to stay indoors and practise social distancing. And, it is your job as adult children to make sure that they do.
